Ultima 7 & Serpent Isle complete upgrade package v1.20
        ------------------------------------------------------

Win9x patch by Gilbert Rouqui (Dragon Baroque)
Distributed by Ron Windeyer (Gaseous Dragon)
GM/GS patches by Mike 'Newt' Cornelius

                    Complete package done by Dagon

This package is the complete upgrade solution for Win9x/ME/2000 users who want to play Ultima 7 Part One (The Black Game / Forge of Virtue) and Ultima 7 Part Two (Serpent Isle / Silver Seed) on Windows, without the need of a MSDOS boot diskette. It also patches the two games to make full use of the GM/GS capabilities of recent soundcards (i.e : soundblaster live!).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTALLATION :
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Install your game (U7 or SI)

2) Check that your game is the most recent version. If installed from a Ultima 7 Complete CD, it probably is. Else, get the updates at EA.com.

In any case, U7WIN9X depends on Ultima 7 being the US distribution of :

Ultima 7 Part One : U7.EXE 689248 bytes, Jun 02 1992,
version stamp at offset 45D1D = ver 3.4
Created Jun 02 1992 18:50:49

Ultima 7 Part Two : SI.EXE 754240 bytes, Feb 03 1994,
version stamp at offset 46403 = Ver 1.02s5 Final
Created Jul 14 1993 12:43:24

3) launch the patch depending on the game you want to patch :
"Ultima7 in Windows install"
or
"Serpent Isle in Windows install"

4) follow onscreen instructions

5) run the "setup sound card for ..." in the program group created and select your soundcard. Be sure to select the MT32/LAPC1 MIDI for music if you use the GM/GS patch. Disregard the install complains about the machine being in protected mode or memory.

6) play the game by launching it in the program group.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONS FOR PCI / MIDI SOUNDCARDS USERS
(SB16 COMPATIBLE)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I highly recommend for those with a MIDI capable soundcard to use the awesome scc1t2.sf2 (available at my website http://dagon.cjb.net) to play U7/SI. Because the music of those games were composed on Roland MT32, this is the best soundbank available for music, to be listened as they should be. Because U7 programmers used some MT32 reprogrammed MIDI instruments, some sfx are alas bad, but in SI, they are perfect (Origin stopped to use the MIDI reprogrammation for sfx).

For those with a PCI soundcard (soundblaster live), like me. I'll explain here how to setup your soundcard under windows to get the sound effects & perfect MIDI musics.

1) Be sure that your SB16 EMULATION is active in the System/properties.
IRQ/DMA/addresses should be like the standard setup the old DOS software used :
- I/O (sb16 music/sounds) = 220
- I/O (midi) = 330 or 300
- IRQ 5 or 7
- DMA (8 bit sounds) = 1
- DMA (16 bit sounds) = 5

If your system use other IRQ-DMA-I/O, setup them manually, and don't let Windows choose.

2) If the MIDI is correctly configured in Windows for your soundcard, and you selected the correct soundcard address in the U7/SI install ("setup sound card for ..." in the program group), the game should run perfectly, with soundblaster sound & MIDI music. Don't forget to get the scc1t2.sf2 to get the best possible MIDI musics.

-----------------
TROUBLESHOOTING :
-----------------

If you hear no MIDI :
---------------------

- check your system if MIDI is correctly configured (do you have a soundbank loaded ?), try to play a MIDI under windows.
- check if the "SOUNDBLASTER 16 EMULATION" midi I/O address is at 330 in the system/properties

If you hear no voice/sfx :
--------------------------
- check if the SOUNDBLASTER 16 EMULATION addresses are the same than those chosen in the "setup sound card for ..." in the program group.

Other problems...

I don't know....
Every files of the respective authors are in the U7win9x, ult7gm & ult7p2gm directories. I strongly encourage to refer to the readme(s) inside those dirs, for more info.
